Sarah Bryden is set to pursue her love of art, and go away to college, when the grandfather who has raised her, has an accident that incapacitates him, and at the same time prevents Sarah going to college.
Sarah resigns herself to small town life in Kansas, working at the local café, and going out with Billy Moon, a widowed school teacher. Time passes, and Sarah’s life looks set to follow a simple and uneventful course, until a brilliant physicist and his wife arrive in town.
Both professional career-consumed individuals, John and Susan Wilde have chosen the quiet sanctuary of Susan’s family home to escape to, in the hope of raising their newly-adopted son, Will, in peace and tranquility, away from the city’s pressures.
Will, having been seriously ill at birth, proves a difficult baby, and Susan is unable to bond with him. When an accident renders Susan unable to care for Will, Sarah steps in, forming an immediate and deep bond with the baby, and John.
What follows is a gentle and sad tale, that travels far from Kansas to Paris, and Greece, amongst other places. Separation, unrequited love, tragedy, and hopes for renewed and meaningful lives intertwine into a poignant story, which we can all, on some level, associate with.
With characters that possess a great reality, and with whom you can empathize, this simple, yet beautiful account, will consume you, rendering you unable to put the book down until it is finished.
