About Paul A. Paterson
Harvey is the pampered son of a millionaire, used to having maids and butlers at his beck and call. All that changes, however, when, while on a cruise, a wave sweeps him off the deck and into the ocean. When all seems lost, the crew of a fishing boat plucks the nearly drowned boy from the chilly water. Harvey's dream rescue turns into a nightmare, however, when he learns the captain of the trawler has no intention of returning to port until he has a boat load of fish, and that could take days -- or weeks. And, he informs Harvey, nobody on board eats for free, so if the lad expects food he has to earn his keep.
Perhaps one of the greatest writers of his era, Kipling weaves a compelling story full of colorful characters and white-knuckle action. The main plot follows Harvey's transition from a spoiled rich brat to a reliable and versatile member of the crew. When we first meet him, Harvey is arrogant and self-absorbed. When the crew finally returns him to shore, he's matured, humbled and understands the importance of others. There is also a physical transformation, as Harvey's soft hands and weak arms develop calluses and muscles from the rigors of tying ropes and hauling nets.
Set on the Grand Banks, Captain's Courageous is truly a fish-out-of-water story. Fans of history will enjoy the depictions of the 19th Century fishing industry, and the colloquial terms used by the fishermen. The book is suitable for young adults, as well, with its portrayal of the classic conflict between man and nature. It is truly a classic, and worth a read for anyone.
