About Sarita Mehra
I have a dog-eared copy of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” sitting on my
shelf. The spine is worn and a couple of the pages are coming loose. It is,
by far, my favourite book in the world.
I picked it up the other day, and while sitting in the morning sun, returned
to childhood memories and the remarkable adventure of Charlie, Willy Wonka
and Grandpa Joe. Roald Dahl is an author who managed to tap into the inner
workings of children everywhere, writing about the things that were
important to them and sparking their imaginations with images and characters
that are still some of the finest in the literary world.
We meet the Buckets just before Willy Wonka announces his amazing
competition and the hunt for the Golden Ticket. One can’t help admire the
family for all they are able to do, and we cheer as Charlie wins a ticket
and embarks on the tour of the lifetime – a personally guided tour of Willy
Wonka’s factory.
The other winners are priceless with Augustus Gloop, Mike TeeVee, Veruca
Salt and Violet Beauregard. And who can forget the Oompa Loompas!
Many have seen the wonderful film rendition but this is book that is worth
visiting, or if you’re like me, revisiting. It’s an easy read for those with
children 8 years and up, and the story makes excellent bedtime reading for
those who may prefer some quality time with their younger children.
“Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” is the first book I found myself reading
over and over again, and will awaken the child in everyone.
